Early Monday Class

(Inspired by the unspoken "10 minute rule” in college)

One
We are conditioned to sit
Ready to look attentive in listening
Hurriedly skimming over the assigned reading
Texts, notebooks, and utensils for writing…
Whew, another week is about to hit

Three
Someone breaks the silence
Tales of the weekend transpire
Failed attempts to study are shared through the wire
Competition starts for “The Procrastination Liar”…
Wait, is the professor in presence?

Five
I introduce a hope that lives:
What if the instructor cancelled class?
A better day would come to pass
The assignment can join the other unfinished mass
We agonize each time the door gives

Ten
Oh glorious happy day!
Let’s sign-in and leave
I now can go back to sleep
We have time, a break, we’re free…
What a joy to start today

Eleven
Bliss receives a dent
Could you not wait another minute?
This arrival cannot be Heaven sent
Why have we been taught to relent?
This is cruel and unusual punishment.
